Your Day Trading Business - Costs

You’ve heard it said before. You need money to make money. The question for traders is—how much money?

Let’s compare what it would cost to start any new business with what it costs to develop your stock day trading business—with us.

Traditional Small Business - Start up Costs

Developing any new business (not a day trading business) costs a minimum of $200,000 for - planning, legal, accounting, staffing, education, training, space purchase or lease, inventory and equipment, and so on. You can add to that any franchise costs that may be involved.

Then usually another $50,000 or so for market research, marketing, and sales programs. Implementation takes time — for most businesses, years - to gain image/brand recognition, reach breakeven cash flow, and then, if you are one of the luck few businesses, attain levels of profitability you planned from the beginning.

So - let’s say any new small business startup will cost from $250-350K to become break even.

Time estimates? Let’s say 1 to 2 years. Most take longer. Keep in mind, most business go belly up in that time. Traditional business is risky business.

Day Trading Business - Start up Costs

Let’s take a look at starting a day trading business. As you will be trading from your home, you guessed right, your costs will be a fraction of what it takes to start any other business.

You will need little if any legal, accounting, staffing, office acquisition costs. Nor will your business require much in the way of planning. Here’s the good part: no employees, no travel of commutes, no collections, no marketing, no sales, and, can’t resist, no meetings, and no bad debts.

In sharp contrast to traditional small business development costs, your day trading business development program will cost (or has already cost you) well under $100,000 depending on the instrument you decide to trade, your level of trading expertise, and whether you trade with or without a consultant / coach. These costs include trading capital, of course. For stock day traders that’s a minimum of $25,000 for a margin account and we suggest more like $50,000 to have sufficient buying power.

The go it alone, extremely cost conscious trader with a minimum of training and competence, a so-so computer system can get in at the low end easily enough. We don’t recommend it. Most traders in this category that I talk with treat trading stocks like a hobby, skimping and hoping to get rich with every trade. Instead, they just blow out one account after the other.

Then there is the gung-ho, do whatever it takes trader who buys a state of the art computer with wall to wall monitors, attends all the latest seminars and expos, reads all the best trading books, listens to the latest and greatest CDs, tries endless systems and searches for the best indicators to implement within his trading approach, and so on. It may surprise you to know that this trader, a smart, successful guy in his non-trading element, gets similar dead-end results. Profitability alludes him as well.

Here’s the trap, here’s the dilemma for want-to-be traders - seeking profitability, aspiring to be winners.

Many of those who remain losers (not profitable) can zip through $10,000, $50,000, $100,000 and much more in less than a year trading like this.

Here’s is my unbridled advice — unless you are willing to trade the winners, trading with your own winning coach, stop trading! Get back to your day job. Find another more promising career to develop. Open any other promising business.
